FTL: Advanced Crew Management & Events

FTL is a game of decisions. This guide covers crew management, event choices, and advanced strategies.

Crew Composition

Optimal Crew Sizes

  • Small ships (4-6 crew): Focus on combat. Every crew member should be a fighter.
  • Medium ships (7-10 crew): Balance combat and systems. Assign 2-3 to shields, rest to weapons.
  • Large ships (11+ crew): Full specialization. Dedicated engineers, pilots, and fighters.

Species Abilities

  • Human: Jack-of-all-trades. +15% repair speed. Good for any role.
  • Engi: +50% repair speed, immune to fire. Best engineers in the game.
  • Mantis: +25% combat damage, board enemies. Best fighters.
  • Rockman: Immune to fire, +50% HP. Tanks that can walk through fires.
  • Slug: Can see through fog (with slug crew). Telepathy reveals crew positions.
  • Crystal: Can lock rooms (Crystal Vents). Useful for trapping boarders.
  • Lanius: Drains oxygen in rooms. Devastating against enemy boarders.

Best Crew Compositions

  • Combat ship: 2 Mantis + 2 Engi + 1 Human (pilot)
  • Tank ship: 2 Rockman + 2 Engi + 1 Human (pilot)
  • Stealth ship: 1 Slug + 2 Engi + 1 Human (pilot)
  • Boarding ship: 4 Mantis + 1 Engi (teleporter specialist)

Event Choices Guide

High-Value Events

  • Distress Beacon (Slave Ship): Free crew member if you defeat the slavers. Always fight.
  • Distress Beacon (Trader): Buy items at 50% discount. Always trade.
  • Distress Beacon (Rebel Ship): Free scrap if you win. Always fight.
  • Nebula Event: Free fuel or scrap. Always take the free stuff.

Risky Events

  • Pirate Ambush: High scrap reward but strong enemies. Only fight if your ship is strong.
  • Alien Merchant: Buy random items. Can be amazing or terrible. High risk.
  • Rebel Flagship: The final boss. Only fight when fully prepared.

Events to Avoid

  • Plague Ship: Crew dies over time. Not worth the risk.
  • Cursed Ship: Systems malfunction. Terrible for any build.
  • Rebel Patrol: Strong enemies, low reward. Skip if possible.

Slave Ship Strategy

Slave ships appear as distress beacons. They have:

  • 2-3 Mantis crew (strong fighters)
  • Transport beam (boards your ship)
  • Low shields (easy to destroy)

Strategy: Let them board, then kill the boarders with your crew. Once their crew is dead, destroy the ship for free scrap and a rescued crew member.

Tip: Mantis boarders are deadly. Use Rockman (fire immune) or Engi (fast repair) to handle them.

Hacking Drone Strategy

The Hacking Drone is the most powerful drone in the game:

  • Disables enemy systems for 8 seconds
  • Can target shields, weapons, or engines
  • Costs 3 drone parts to build

Best uses:

  • Target shields before a big volley. Enemy shields go down, your missiles hit hull.
  • Target weapons during a fight. Enemy cant shoot back.
  • Target engines to prevent escape. Guaranteed scrap from destroyed ships.

Tip: Save your Hacking Drone for boss fights. The Rebel Flagship has 4 shield layers — hacking shields lets your missiles deal full damage.

Advanced Tips

  • Store scrap for the store. Dont spend everything on upgrades.
  • Buy drone parts whenever you see them. Drones are game-changing.
  • Avoid rebel fleet by taking longer routes. More events = more scrap.
  • Repair between fights. A damaged ship is a dead ship.
  • Use cloaking to dodge missiles. Saves shield power.
  • Boarding is risky but rewarding. Only board if you have Mantis crew.
